822lbs pumpkin grown at Middlesbrough allotments

A PUMPKIN has grown to a frighteningly big size – weighing in at a whopping 822lbs.

The spookily big fruit was grown by Terry Smith at Beechwood Allotments in Easterside, Middlesbrough.

Mr Smith, 49, grows giant pumpkins every year and this year’s effort is more than double the size of last year’s – which weighed in at 348lbs.

The BT engineer from Easterside said: “I used a different tactic this year – I grew the pumpkins inside.

“Normally I grow them outdoors but I used a polytunnel this time and it has made a big difference. I can’t believe how big it is.

“We have never had them this size before. It is very hard to move it.”

The pumpkin is thought to be the biggest one on Teesside.

Mr Smith’s grandchildren Byron James, six, and Ellie-May, 13, helped him create the masterpiece and are both very impressed with the final result.

Mr Smith said: “They can’t believe how big this year’s one is.

“We are going to carve it, which might be a bit of a challenge.”

Terry’s pumpkin might be his heaviest yet but he still has some way to go if he wants to claim the crown of world’s heaviest pumpkins.

Reports from the US earlier this month stated that the record has been smashed twice in quick succession.

The first record-breaker came in Boscawen, New Hampshire, weighing in at 1,843lbs.

But just days later a whopper grown in Greene, Rhode Island was unveiled at Topsfield Fair in Massachusetts tipping the scales at an incredible 2,009lbs
